Dr. Joseph Borer Honored with the 2025 Richard W. Grady Humanitarian Award
We are proud to celebrate Dr. Joseph Borer, a world-renowned pediatric urologist and surgeon, as the recipient of this year’s Grady Award. This recognition reflects not only his extraordinary contributions to the field of urology, but also the compassion, dedication, and humility he brings to every patient and family he serves.
A Leader in Complex Urologic Care
Dr. Borer has devoted his career to caring for patients with some of the most complex urologic challenges. Specializing in major reconstructive surgery—both standard and minimally invasive—he combines technical expertise with deep commitment to innovation. As the first incumbent Reconstructive Urologic Surgery Chair, Director of the Bladder Exstrophy Program, Co-Director of the Robotics Program, and Director of Neurourology and Urodynamics, he is uniquely positioned to optimize care for infants, children, and young adults living with complex genitourinary anomalies.
Advancing the Field Through Research and Collaboration
Beyond his surgical practice, Dr. Borer has advanced the field through groundbreaking research. His development of the Bladder Exstrophy Program has led to significant published outcomes, while his genetic and translational studies are helping to uncover the molecular basis of congenital anomalies. He is also a Co-PI on projects that employ state-of-the-art genome sequencing to better understand exstrophy and related conditions.
Collaboration has always been central to his work. He co-founded the MIBEC initiative with colleagues Doug Canning, John Kryger, and Mike Mitchell, advancing international cooperation in bladder exstrophy care. He also partners with Diane Price to lead the bi-annual Boston Children’s Hospital support groups, creating vital spaces of connection and encouragement for patients and families.

A Teacher and Mentor at Heart
As much as Dr. Borer is recognized for his clinical and research excellence, he is equally admired for his role as a teacher and mentor. He has trained dozens of residents and fellows, instilling in them not only surgical skills but also the values of humility, compassion, and lifelong learning. His colleagues recall how often he was found at a patient’s bedside in the quiet hours of the night—evidence of his devotion and empathy.
Patients and peers alike describe him as a physician who embodies both surgical excellence and deep compassion, often going above and beyond to support families in their most difficult moments.
“Dr. Borer represents the very best of our field — a brilliant surgeon, an innovative researcher, and above all, a compassionate healer,” said Evalynn Vasquez, MD, Chair of the A-BE-C Medical Advisory Board. “His unwavering commitment to patients and families has transformed lives and inspired generations of providers. The Grady Award is a recognition not only of his achievements, but of his extraordinary humanity.”
A Legacy of Compassion
Dr. Borer’s patients and their families describe him as not just a doctor, but a true partner in their care. He remembers every patient by name, because he invests deeply in each individual’s journey. Though he has written countless manuscripts, book chapters, and presented around the world, he is never motivated by recognition. Instead, his driving force has always been delivering the very best care possible.
The Grady Award is a fitting acknowledgment of his lifelong dedication to innovation, collaboration, and compassionate care. While Dr. Borer may not seek accolades, those who know him agree: no one is more deserving of this honor.
Congratulations, Dr. Borer, and thank you for the immeasurable impact you’ve made on patients, families, colleagues, and the future of pediatric urology.
